5 Ways to Gracefully Quit Your Job

Jobs nowadays are synonymous to slavery. Working for giant corporations may give you a handsome salary and you could be easily driven towards that incentive naturally. But by the end of the day, when those few extra bucks do not bring a smile on your face, it is then that you realize you aren’t happy with your job. When the money and your job cannot fill the hollowness in you, it is then that you wish to quit. It is one aspect of looking at it. There could be other reasons why you want to quit working for someone.

Why People Quit?

There isn’t a definitive reason as to why one takes such steps. It is quite rightly said that desperate times call for desperate measures. Those desperate times could be different for different people depending upon the situation they are put in. Some prominent reasons for quitting your job are

  • You are over qualified for what you are doing
  • You are under qualified for the nature of your job which is why it becomes hard for you to get it going
  • You are not happy with the working environment
  • The job pays less
  • The job is harder than you thought it would be
  • You have personal reason for doing so
  • You wish to relocate
  • You wish to change your industry
  • You don’t need the job anymore
  • A better opportunity has popped up

The list goes on.

How to Gracefully Quit?

There is a proper decorum for working at some place ergo a decorum has to be taken into account when you wish to quit as well. No matter what your reason is, happy or sad or even neutral could be your reason, you are required to act along the following steps when you have to quit.

1. Need:

Quit when it is absolutely inevitable and imperative. Landing on a good job is not everyone’s fate. Seeing how saturated the employment market is, securing a job is no less than hitting a jack pot so firstly you have to sure if you absolutely don’t need the job. Quit only because a colleague wasn’t nice to you is a disgrace to your values as well. Make up your mind first and see if you can survive. Only then you can give up on your job. If there is a problem that you could tackle on your own, you should try doing that first. When that solution of yours does not work, only then you should quit.

2. Prior Notice

There has to be a prior notice. You never ever leave abruptly. This means bad manners and ethics. When you were first offered a job, an appointment letter or job offer was mailed you and following that you joined a company. Likewise when you wish to discontinue working for them you must give the authorities a notice, before resigning. This would be a request for resignation acceptance letter. The employee resignation letter follows after this. The employer acceptance of this notice is mandatory. It has to be a month or two before so that your equivalent could be recruited.

3. State your Reason Clearly:

Let your manager and authority know the reason why you are quitting. The notice you present has to include the reason as to why you are taking such a huge step. State your reasons sensibly, your feelings and why you are no more interested in that job. Even if the reason is harsh, try putting it in civil way because that is what professionalism dictate.

4. Resignation Letter:

Follow a proper format when you resign. Your resignation letter has to reach the upper authorities so make it reasonable and mannerly because your last job would be used as a reference when you are going to apply somewhere else. Resignation letter isn’t a prior notice. It is different than that. Do leave but only after you have submitted your resignation letter.

5. Bid farewell to your Colleagues and your top Management:

You have maintained a good behavior up till now. Do not mess up this last step. You are only required to now politely say good bye to your fellows. It is highly likely that there are going to be people you don’t want to work with and you absolutely disgust but even to them, be nice and have a proper parting with them too. Just like the way when you first started this job, you met people your co-workers nicely, sendoff requires the same level of respect and mannerism.

Your job isn’t done here. Although you have quit and moved on with your life and new job somewhere else, that does not mean you bad mouth about your old job. Bad mouthing about a job or co-worker isn’t a professional gesture. You have got to remain professional because your mannerism may be forgotten but unprofessional individual is never welcomed in any workplace under any circumstances. Do not leave a place with a heavy heart, take every sendoff positively. Take it with s spirit that promises new challenges, new environment and better growth opportunities. Consider the world your oyster and start fishing for more and better jobs.
